Retirement in Puriscal Costa Rica

  The exact requirements for Costa Rica Residency change often, but according to recent pronouncements, there are five principle ways to qualify for residency, including:

Retiree - Pensionado: Must show proof of monthly income from a qualified pension plan or social security benefits of at least US$600.

Legal Resident - Rentista: Must show proof of at least US$1,000 monthly income from interest or dividends and that its payment to you is guaranteed for the next 60 months (5 years).

Married to or Descendant of Costa rican Citizen: Must prove relationship, either by marriage or blood to a Costa Rican citizen, and the citizen must be willing to petition and sponsor you.

Employee or representative of a foreign company working in Costa Rica: Including Executive level personnel, technical and professional staff. Company must prove that you possess experience and/or knowledge vital to the business.

Costa Rica Residency qualification for Investors:

Costa Rica offers Residency qualification for Investors ( Inversionista) in three main categories:

  • $50,000 investment in Tourism or Exports

  • $100,000 for Reforestation

  • $200,000 through other investments.

Must reside a minimum of 4 months in the country.


Requirements for each applicant:

  • Birth certificate -- certified and authenticated
  • Police Clearance Letter -- not older than 6 months
  • Current Passport
  • Twelve recent passport-type photographs
  • If spouse is also applying: marriage certificate -- certified and authenticated
